FIN 434 Foundations of Development Policy (3 Credits)

Students will study the different aspects of human development: health, family, education, gender, land relations, formal and informal norms, and institutions. Students will discuss the decisions of deprived households in developing economies and the scope for policy (by international organizations, government, or NGOs.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the different facets of human development: education, health, gender, the family, land relations, risk, informal and formal norms and institutions.
  • Analyze what determines the decisions of poor households in developing countries. Explore what constraints are they subject to.
  • Research the scope for policy (by government, international organizations, or NGOs). Study policies have been tried out and what have been successful.
