BHS 305 Introduction to Epidemiology and Biostatistics (3 Credits)

This course is for students pursuing careers in the health sciences. Introduces students to basic epidemiological and biostatistical concepts, epidemiological study design and the common ideas surrounding the use of selected biostatistical techniques. Students will critically read and comment upon the scientific articles. SPSS will be the statistical software package used in this course. Writing and critical thinking skills essential.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define and explain the central concepts of epidemiology and biostatistics.
  • Evaluate scientific evidence with application to the health sciences.
  • Demonstrate scientific writing skills.
  • Perform statistical analyses using SPSS and interpret findings.
  • Critically review professional journal article in health sciences for illustration of course concepts.
