BHF 403 Topics: Medical Law and Ethics (3 Credits)

This course is for students pursuing careers in the health sciences. This course looks at the legal relationship between allied health care professionals and patients. Emphasis placed on the basic concepts and principles of ethics and law involved in the provision of health care services. Special attention given to issues of medical law and ethics in a global setting.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the code of ethics and the responsibilities of allied healthcare professionals.
  • Identify legal relationships between allied healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Discuss issues that allied healthcare professionals need to be aware of when performing within a legal scope of practice.
  • Discuss different types of licensure and certifications for allied health professionals.
  • Outline proper ethical guidelines for sharing patient medical information.
  • Critically review professional journal article in health sciences and health care ethics for illustration of course concepts.
