MATESOL 607- Seminar in Research Methods (3 Credits)

This course prepares students to be critical consumers of research literature in preparation for the practicum project and as TESOL professionals. The two principle components of the course are an overview of qualitative and quantitative research design and an analysis of professional writing. Students read and evaluate journal articles in TESOL, become familiar with library and online research strategies, and review and practice the structure and rules of academic writing.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about appropriate research methods. Understand what promotes technical competence in TESOL research.
  • Be critical consumers of research literature in preparation for the practicum project and as TESOL professionals.
  • Read and evaluate journal articles in TESOL, become familiar with library and online research strategies, and review and practice the structure and rules of academic writing.
  • Understand the components of ethical and clear academic writing.
