MATESOL 602- Theory of Second Language Acquisition (3 Credits)

This course investigates the nature, organization and function of human language and focuses on the different components of language structure-phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the theories and methods of English language teaching and explore the psychological, socio-cultural, political and pedagogical factors of first and second language development.
  • Review historical approaches for teaching Second Language Learners (SLL).
  • Examine research that supports best teaching approaches for SLL students.
  • Describe key components of effective instruction and curriculum for SLL students. Analyze the relationship between culture and learning styles.
  • Compare and contrast effective versus non-effective instructional strategies for SLL students.
  • Examine the stages of second-language acquisition as they relate to instructional strategies.
